I've been to Unawatuna 4 times/years and that beautiful place changes for worse.
There is new oversized monster-hotel, water scooters, loud music, fireworks, higher prices...
In last 2 years 90% of tourists are Russians - some restaurants are only in russian.
Most likely, I am not going back.

Unawatuna beach has beautiful water and golden sand.
Unawatuna beach has beautiful water and golden sand. The part of the beach where I visited, the ocean gets quite deep very fast, and the waves seem to cary you in quite easily. I haven't seen any lifeguards or flags that would indicate the wave's condition, but local people were very kind to give information.
If you like hiking, the city has a nice trail to a beach called Jungle beach. Trough the same trail, you can pass by the Japanese Peace Pagoda, and if you are lucky you might see monkeys and lizards. The trail is more or less 40 min one way.
The restaurants from the hotels are very much on the coast, sometimes seems to close from the beach. But the food quality is good and affordable, and lots of these restaurants offer alcohol.
I stayed one day in Unawatuna and it felt enough time to discover what the city has to offer.

I heard that this used to be a great beach.
I heard that this used to be a great beach. Unfortunately I do not think it is today. Very exploited and there are many beach places renting out sunbeds. They can get away with having (very) crappy toilets because there are new tourists every day, they do not need a good review.
Having dinner on the beach was a strange experience, started out good but then a large company came and occupied the space next to us, ordering champagne, oysters and lobsters like there was no tomorrow, and we were forgotten about.
There are plenty of other beaches in Sri Lanka that are much better.
The staff are super friendly. Ranjit helped us and make us feel welcome. Our room was big and spacious with a good bathroom. We had a stunning view of the peace stupa from our room too and the beach. The cocktails on the lounge upstairs were so delicious and the infinity pool is perfect! We also had dinner here one night - very yummy and huge portions. They also do an amazing Sri Lankan breakfast - very hearty! There’s also a free Tuktuk shuttle from the hotel to Jungle Beach (which is so so beautiful) I would definitely stay here again.
We were made to feel so welcome, nothing was too much trouble. Sumith and his team were wonderful and the chef served a wonderful breakfast and we had the best Sri Lanka curry whilst there. The hotel is so close to the beach, towels and mats are provided. The swimming pool was perfect for us, clean and relaxing, free rides to local beaches and Galle were available and the hotel is beautiful with interesting artefacts. The highlight was to meet Sumith's family and hear his niece serenade us. THANK YOU
Thambapanni is a hotel with style and flair. We had a luxury room with a very comfortable bed, a nice bath and a space Terrasse surrounded by banana plants and palm trees. Breakfast is buffet, they brew strong coffee on request. The pool looks nice, for swimming it’s okay. But we preferred the ocean, which is only 10 minutes away. At the beach Thambapanni has also a restaurant, where you can catch a sun bed, if you are lucky (and faster than Russian guests, who look at Unawatuna as their second home).
Highly recommend! I had a amazing experience at the Kingfisher Bamboo Vila; staff was incredibly helpful, and the amenities were great. The room was wonderful, clean, and perfect! Excellent property and very convenient to all the restaurants and shops.
I visited their Restaurant , Kingfisher Unawatuna Hotel. Which is a 2mins walk. Food was Excellent. Lobsters, Crab, Oysters, Etc. was fresh from the boat! Unawatuna Beach was out the world. Had a amazing time in Sri Lanka!
We recently stayed for 6 nights at Galle Henna Beach House, located at the peaceful end of Unawatuna Beach. Its prime location offers easy beach access and proximity to great restaurants. The staff were incredibly welcoming, ensuring a comfortable stay. The breakfast, offering both continental and traditional Sri Lankan options, was consistently delightful. Galle Henna Beach House comes highly recommended for its serene setting, friendly service, and delicious breakfast.
Very kind and warm host. The rooms are super comfy with AC which is why I booked in first place. It is easier to get to location from train station by tuk tuk.The breakfast here is the best breakfast i have had in Sri Lanka..the pancakes are amazing n Taranga's fruit juice game is on point 😃She also helps with scooty rentals n there is rex the doggo who will make your day.Can use pick me app or scooty to go to Unawatuna, nearby beaches n galle.Highly recommend!
I was in this hotel for a week. I liked everything very much, spacious rooms, friendly staff, quiet place, to get to the center you need a bike, but you need it everywhere in Sri Lanka, so it was not a problem. the absence of a large number of insects and a couple of cute kittens that play with you during breakfast left a lot of the best emotions. if you stay in unawatuna, then only in this hotel! special thanks to all the staff, see you soon
Basic accommodation very near the beach with the nicest family you will meet in Sri Lanka.
This is backpacking as it used to be.
The garden is full of wildlife .. I lost count of the species of birds ... Mongoose and Monkeys visit often
The family will go out of their way to make your stay as enjoyable as possible
This is not 5 star .. it is basic ... but the family are 5 star ... including their pet cow
The unexpected good place in Sri Lanka. We have almost everything in our room: fridge, fan, different small but important things like scissors etc. Room also were a bit designed, not just 4 walls. Everything was clean and comfortable. Not far from the hotel there are small beach protected by reef, where you can swimm even during bed wheather. Recommend
Literally the best place I've stayed in while in Sri Lanka. It is very clean and freshly renovated. Ruchira, the guy who runs the place is super helpful and just a pleasant person to be around. The location is good too, far away from the busy road that you don't heat it at all, but still close enough to the beach and the main town street in Unawatuna.
The hotel garden is exceptinal. I believe they are the best one in Unawatuna. The breakfast is beyond expectations. Pool is lovely for the familys, we prefer to swim in the sea. They have a private beach but maybe it may be season effect, the sea was so wavy. There are good beaches reachable by tuk tuk.
It is a really great hotel in terms of restaurants, food (unless you are not into spicy Sri Lankan cuisine, because there is almost nothing international available except for the breakfast), facilities, and staff.
Staff at the restaurants, in the lobby, by the pool, and the beach are amazing.
This hotel was absolutely beautiful. Perfect for a relaxing end to our tour of Sri Lanka!! We’d spent a week touring the hill country (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella) and this pristine boutique hotel was the perfect place to relax on the beach to finish our trip!
we got a room with sea view. the view was the nicest one we had during our stay in Sri Lanka.
the hotel is in a calm area and they have no access to the beach (shallow water beach). however, they are having a shuttle to drop you to the beach if needed.
A lovely air-conditioned room with all amenities, including a kitchen for all yourself. It is peaceful and very reachable to Unawatuna and Galle. I loved taking the short cut path from this place to Jungle beach.
This is a really nice hotel with a great location. Just a few steps to Unawatuna beach, close to jungle beach and around 20 min in tuk tuk to Galle Fort. Big rooms and a nice pool area.
The garden is beautiful, serene and quiet just what I was looking for.
The staff super nice and helpful always.
Wonderful breakfast combination of Sri Lankan and western style
Beautiful location and rooms, very close to Unawatuna beach! Especially the bathroom was much nicer than most hotels we’ve seen in our Sri Lankan travels!
Highly recommended.
Service excellent, hotel location great with awesome views to Galle and whole of the bay . I would happily recommend this hotel . The room and bed were excellent.
