The breakfast buffet was very good and the quality of treatments at the spa did not disapoint.
However, we were disappointed with the general professionalism of the staff considering it is a 5 star resort. The staff was kind and friendly but just not up to the standard one would expect of a 5 star hotel. Here are a few examples: at the pool we ordered some food and when we were going to sign for the bill, the waiter said they had made a mistake and charged us for a dish that was 0.50 USD more than what we had ordered. He asked us if we didn't mind paying the extra amount so that they didn't need to redo the bill. Of course we didn't mind as its such a small difference (so we accepted) but out of principle, if a mistake is made by the staff, they should know to just fix the error rather than asking the guest to make up for their mistake (however small). We were also disappointed at dinner that the two a la carte restaurants were only open on alternate nights as it meant we couldn't get a table until 9 pm which is late with kids. Also the first wines we tried to order were out of stock. Finally on the second night at the Italian, three of the dishes we chose were unavailable. This is understandable as it is end of season, but again is not expected at a 5 star hotel. That said, the quality of the food at the Italian was really very good.
As for the rooms, although comfortable, the extra maintenance effort is lacking. The hot and cold water in the shower was very difficult to control; the light in the small magnifying mirror in the bathroom was not working and the main telephone in the room did not work.
Lastly, we visited the spa and although the overall experience was very good and the therapists were experienced, it was disappointing to have to wait over half an hour (after our scheduled appointment time) for our treatments.
Overall, this felt more of a 3-4 star hotel than 5 star.

The hotel itself probably needs an uplift e.g. pool deck is old, pool lounge chairs are broken, walls need a new coat of paint, however we enjoyed our stay as the pool and hotel surroundings are quite nice. Food at the restaurant was surprisingly good. Room was large and air cond worked well, beds are big. Bathroom needs updating but shower was strong and good temperature. Overall, a good hotel but don’t expect 5 stars.

A short distance from Colombo, Katutura is ideal for a long weekend if you are based in Colombo. There are plenty of things to see in the area and you can always arrange a visit to Galle through your hotel.

Just the right location.
Just the right location. Not too far from Colombo but has the nice secluded feel, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Close to a lot of places to visit - Kalutara temple, Bentota for water sports, Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery.
Overall, a great place to be in!!

The area is quite, and not far from water sports activities.
The area is quite, and not far from water sports activities. The problem is that there are no decent restaurants or coffees near by. You are opted to only eat at the hotel, unless you are adventurous. You are better off to go a bit more south or north and close to the capital to find reasonable restaurants and coffees etc. If you like to each and just stay within the resort then you will be OK as hotels in the area offer everything you need.

Kalutara is a great place for a short stay.
Kalutara is a great place for a short stay. While it is not as crowded with tourists and activities when compared with her neighbouring districts Colombo and Galle, it is quite special in it's own simplicity. The sights generally known to see are few and are quite close too each other. A day to sightsee and enjoy the city, a day to enjoy the hotel and it's facilities and a day for the beach and surrounding neighbourhood is in my opinion the ideal way to plan a trip to Kalutara.
The best place you must visit in my opinion is Jeoffrey Bava's garden. The place is great to walk around, take some beautiful photos and run around a little.
We stayed here for 4 weeks, and it was the best time we had in Sri Lanka. The whole house is beautiful and the private pool is fantastic.
The hosts Judy and Neil were so amazing, couldn't do enough for us. The whole apartment was excellent. It was very well equipped, comfortable and spotlessly clean.
The area is nice and they can arrange transport and advise on places to visit.
Thank you Judy and Neil, we came as guests and left as friends, thoroughly recommend staying here.
The Awesome food :) it was so scrumptious that we enjoyed every bite of it. Specially to dine at the front face of the vast river, was something to add to our travel diary. We have never had this experience at any of the other properties we stayed at. Kurokawa we must say, is a cozy comfy villa in the down south non sea side, which is one of a kind and the only non seas side villa in reasonable distance from the Kalutara town, that stands out
Hotel is really beautiful. It is situated in a nice, calm, sea side location. Staff is very nice. Our check-in, stay & check-out all went smoothly. We came to this Hotel to get a relaxation From all the stressful months we had. We received what we wanted. The peaceful environment, ample facilities of the hotel was as we expected. Food was tasty but low variety for dinner & b'fast (we didn't stay for lunch).
The breakfast was wonderful, served fresh everyday by Stanley at what ever time we wanted it.
Omelette of my choice and Sri Lankan sausages followed by toast and marmalade. This was followed by a fresh fruit salad prepared by Stanley or Sisi ( Sisi is the owner). All served with a pot or two of Ceylon tea.
Nothing was to much trouble for these two wonderful guys.
The room we were given had stunning views. So close to the palm lined beach and perfectly aligned for watching beautiful sunsets. The best view of any hotel during 3 months in Sri Lanka. All the staff were so helpful and the delicious breakfasts were always served with a smile. All facilities available that you would expect in a modern hotel. Highly recommended.
The hosts were perfect and could not have done more for us. We had some trouble finding the place, but they came to meet us where we had stopped and guided us to the hotel. Rooms are spacious and so close to the beach. If you want a quiet, private place to enjoy the beach and local area, this place is for you.
Our stay at Avani hotel was quite enjoyable. Impressed by the exceptional staff service and gym facilities. The food was really good and we appreciated the unlimited water access. Additionally, the spa service was great and of course the beautiful sunsets from the beach.
It was my first stop in Sri Lanka and definitely the best one in the country. The rooms are clean and very comfortable. The service is great especially Shalindra who was extremely helpful and managed to take care of every request. The lagoon side is truly beautiful.
Great food and selection.
Room was big with great views and very clean. Power points for all types of plugs was useful.
Staff are very friendly and owner can take you on tour around which was great.
Right on the beach so is a great spot.
We're disappointed with the hotel as we booked a balcony with a sea view but were given a garden view instead. Despite requesting a change, our concerns have been ignored.
Lovely hotel with so many facilities for everyone in the family. Food was excellent with plenty of varieties. This was our 5th visit and we will be back.
