We stayed here ten years ago and now have two fond memories. The ambiance is fantastic. We had a nice view across the valley. Room was clean. Breakfast was great. Caveoso filled our little coffee Thermos for the road. Good coffee! Ten years ago the smart phone map apps weren't as good but now Google maps made it easy to get in and out.

Always depends on your expectations, but our feeling was Matera was definitively worth 1 full day or 2, especially if you hike to the point of view on the other side of the little canyon, and/or visit a few historic monuments. We could not visit the famous trogloditic crypts of the original sin since the touristic site to make the compulsory reservations (1 day in advance) is such an absurd mess.

The must see place when traveling to Bari/Apulia.
The must see place when traveling to Bari/Apulia. The ancient city is exceptional and definitely worth staying over the night . You easily get lost when walking around (GPS is not very helpful) but it is part of the adventure;) . Be prepared to climb many steps and take your time to enjoy the unique climate of the place.

Matera is a beautiful place with stunning views of the sassi and cave dwellings. There are also some interesting attractions that you can visit to gain a better understanding of how people used to live and what Matera went through before becoming a UNESCO site and the amazing place it is today.
One such attraction is Casa Noha, which is a multimedia demonstration inside a historic stone house. It provides a helpful insight into the history of Matera and the struggles of cave-dwelling life.
Another interesting place to visit is Casa Grotta nei Sassi di Matera, which is not just a cave-dwelling but also a living museum. You can experience what it was like to live in a cave with a straw bed, tiny kitchen, and livestock all within the confines of the cave.
Chiesa Rupestre della Madonna della Croce is a church located on the other side of the Sassi. It offers great views and is definitely worth the drive from Matera.

We had a wonderful time at Matera.
We had a wonderful time at Matera. The people were very friendly even though the season was just about to start and alot of facilities were still closed. We had a great first of the season meal at Enoteca dai Tosi with a tour of the facility. Tasted new wine, delicious meats from the local butcher, local cheeses, and some dishes from the new menu. The town is so beautiful, that you can't take a bad picture. You must prepare for a lot of stairs and walking...have comfortable shoes...
The town was even prettier at night. It was great! We wanted to stay longer and keep exploring....
Staying at Corte San Pietro was a dream come true for me as I had always wanted to stay in a cave. My expectations were more than fulfilled! The rooms were extremely spacious, beautifully decorated in monochromatic earth tones, clean and comfortable. In the heart of Matera Corte San Pietro was THE place to stay. Our hosts were more than helpful, gracious and kind. The taxi service with the garage made coming and going from the hotel extremely easy. The breakfasts were delicious and plentiful. Highly recommend Corte San Pietro!
We were excited to stay in a cave/hotel during our trip to Matera and l'Hotel di Pietra did not disappoint! We had a beautiful, large room with jacuzzi and sauna that was breathtaking. The staff was very helpful and the communal breakfast area in the main lobby area was very good as well! The hotel was a few minute walk from a main piazza and the center of town. From the entrance to the property we had a great view of the Duomo and the Sassi. Matera was magical and staying at Pietra complemented our Matera experience.
OMG!!!! We didn’t want to leave. Everything was perfect. The modern design, technology, kitchen utilities, and ambiance were stupendous. I wouldn’t change anything. I’ll be back for sure… and often.
Perfect location.
Eustachio and Benedetta greeted and cared for us like we were family. (He even parallel parked our large rental SUV in a small spot.) They could teach hospitality to the best 5 star luxury hoteliers. It comes natural to them.
Matera is an amazing, preserved Italian time piece & Maison d'Ax is right in the heart of it. Carved right out of the rock.
The hotel has these two big wood doors that open to a perfect view of the Madonna de Idris (old church carved out of the rocks) and La Gravina caves. Enjoyed a beer watching the sun on the hills after a day of walking the labyrinthine cobbled streets and stairs. Maison d'Ax has a nice little pool. Bring your suit.
The staff was so kind. The rooms were beautiful. We arranged an airport shuttle through the hotel. The driver stopped at many viewpoints in Matera before bringing us to the hotel. He and his colleague were so excited to share the history with us. There were a lot of steps to get to the hotel and they carried our bags for us. They definitely made it easy! Great hotel.
Being in the heart of the Sassi was the best part of our stay. The views were incredible all the way around! We appreciated this little hotel despite its shortcomings - nothing compares to having this cave experience and imaging what Matera was like was back in the day, this was truly special. It was so easy walking everywhere from here. We honestly loved it!
A sweet little boutique hotel with cave rooms and a stunning view of amazing Matera. Junior suite was very nice and despite being a cave surprisingly light with a spacious bathroom. Catering to your every need is Maria Antonella, the very lovely front desk lady sent from heaven. Good breakfast, good WiFi, we were very happy with this accommodation.
We visited Matera as part of a road trip along Amalfi and around Puglia. This was one of my favourite hotels and one night wasn’t long enough!
The rooms are very well done, the setting is stunning, the pool is lovely, and breakfast was great.
A very very peaceful and rustic luxury-feeling stay that offered great value for money!
Travelling Italy from Australia we found a true gem in the most romantic place Matera. Hotel Casino Ridola was an exceptional stay with the most amazing and attentive staff. Alessia gave us the warmest welcome you can expect after long and exhausting travel. Thank you Ridola , we will remember you forever.
YOU'RE IN A CAVE WITH A HOT TUB! I can't say enough about how cool it was to stay in a cave that had all the modern appointments of a 4 star hotel. It was like something out of a dream. And then to wake up to an exceptional breakfast brought to your room was the cherry on top. Fantastic!
Best breakfast in Italy ever ! Traditional products from Matera , all sorts . Sweets and pies as good as you could desire :)
Impressive Thermae-baths comprising long tunnels with blue/ green-lighted hot water.
Great view in the morning over Matera , you will leave in an ancient cave
This hotel is simply amazing! The room was very large, beautifully decorated. The view to Sassi was so nice. The breakfast was absolutely delicious. And the aperitivos we had were soooo nice, accompanied by huge amount of various snacks. This place made our stay at Matera magical!
This was the best accomodation i stayed at for the 3 months i travelled around Italy , the rooms were 5 star and the location was perfect to visit the old town of Matera. I will definitely be back and confidently recommend this place to all my friends and family.
Gorgeous cave hotel with modern comforts, surrounded by the history of Matera. Tricky to find initially (as all things in Matera can be) but worth it. Great breakfast spread. Also we loved Charlie the hotel doggo!
Fabulous boutique hotel in the centre of Matera. Cave rooms were fabulous, such a unique experience. Highly recommend the wine tasting, lovely sommelier and so knowledgeable about the hotels vineyard and wines.
The hotel us beautiful, the view is one of the best in Matera.
Staff very nice and helpful.
Room super clean, beautifully decorated and very special, as they are actually in a sassi (cave)
This was the 4th time I have stayed at Dodici Lune.
The hotel is fabulous and the staff are wonderful. This will continue to be my first choice of hotel when coming to Matera.
Staff was very nice and helpful. Location couldn't be beat with amazing views of Matera. Was a true Matera experience with hotel being built into the cliff.
It was really unusual experience! If you visit Matera, it definitely worth staying in a cave hotel so that you can make a complete impression of the town.
