I love the proximity to the beach and town. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming as they have been in previous stays. The room was exceptionally clean if somewhat dated. No luxuries but a definite win on price and value. Highly recommended if you want to be right on the beach and near everything. I never rent a car as anything you need is within walking distance.

The fresh food was stupendous. Our favorite restaurant was called "Como en mi Casa". The beaches were gorgeous. With guides, you see many sloths and monkeys. People are all very nice. I loved the Jaguar Rescue Center. They took in so many kinds of animals and they strive to rehabilitate them and return them to the wild. They were amazing.
Driving through the main part of town was VERY challenging. Sometimes, folks would just park in the street on a two lane street where there was only one lane for each direction of traffic. Scooters would dart around you from all directions and obeyed no traffic laws. There would be people walking everywhere and sometimes someone in your lane of traffic was pushing a banana cart.
It was hot and no restaurants had air conditioning and very few fans.
For these reasons, I would never want to go back. The difficulties were more challenging than what was offered.

It has a very laid-back, beachy vibe… There are lots of different places to eat with a big variety of choices, and numerous beaches and activities, and several markets, as well as roadside fruit stands to purchase food from.

A true jungle experience in a calm secure, laidback and amazing environment! Amazing little restaurants, beautiful beaches ! Much prefer this Caribbean Coast than the Pacific. Just rent a bike to move around or take a Tuktuk. Fruit markets on the roadsides!

Clearly a place for a younger crowd than us 70+ year olds but that didn't get in the way for us. Always treated well. Great to have such an international mix of people. Great food options, again with a mix of cuisines. With modest efforts you can arrange individualized itineraries for the sights. Infrastructure (local transportation, streets/roads, sidewalks) could benefit from updating - always a challenge in crowded, somewhat remote areas.

Charming Caribbean town, friendly
Charming Caribbean town, friendly
people, fun restaurant and entertainment options However, all gringo eateries are vastly overpriced. Avoid all the fancy places, totally not worth it. Exorbitant prices for nothing special. Opt for the few, but better, luncheonettes instead. Beer, not wine.
Loved Riquisimo! Be aware that different taxis charge different rates for the same trip, because they can haha! Chill! ;-)

This location is crowded with lots of traffic.
This location is crowded with lots of traffic. There’s trash alongside the roads and it’s very noisy at night. You must get up early to find a spot on the beach and the waves can be very rough and unsuitable for swimming just about anywhere. It is also far more expensive than we had remembered compared to our last trip vs the Pacific side.
If you must go to Caribbean side of Costa Rica, stay closer to Punta UVA or Manzanilla away from the crowds.
Where to eat in Puerto Viejo: La Nena, Zaika, Lidia’s Place, Tambie Bros, and Pizzeria Pulcinella.
We had a great stay at Le Cameleon!
Pros:
-Friendly and helpful staff (shoutout to Daniel for all his help)
-beautiful jungle-like property
-2 pools + hot tub
-Easily accessible restaurant across the street
-Quiet (except for the nature sounds! Lots of wildlife on the property so you will definitely hear them)
-far enough from downtown puerto Viejo to feel secluded but a very quick taxi ride or ~30mins bike ride
- a quick 10 mins walk from the Jaguar Sanctuary
-has a spa on the property - good deep tissue massages!
The architecture and amenities superseded our expectations! We loved our room and the variety of ways to spend your time with multiple beaches around, or going into Puerto Viejo, going on a tour guided experience, or just staying and lounging at the hotel on the breathtakingly beautiful Awa beach. Our favorite part was also the staff! They made our experience so beautiful and wonderful in so many ways we will cherish our memories we made forever.
The Alloro Jungle Villas is a perfect family getaway! I would highly recommend to other guests. Our villa was private, secure, comfortable beds, fully equipped kitchen, a/c, the pool was great for the kids too! It is located near Cocles beach, with all the stores and restaurants a short drive away. The hosts are very friendly and helpful. Over the years of visiting the Puerto Viejo area, this is on the best places we've ever stayed at.
We really enjoyed our stay at Casa Lina. The apartment was very clean and comfortable. It is also perfectly located at a quiet street, but near to the shop, restaurants and the beach. The best thing about this accomodation is the garden - we saw there howler monkeys, toucans, agutis and more. Also not forget to mention the great cat companion. The owners were very helpful and we could text them anytime. We highly recommend this place!
we loved everything about this property. It was the perfect romantic getaway. The owners took incredible care of us. Every morning they served us a fresh and delicious breakfast. The room was exceptionally clean. The location was a five minute walk to the beach and just far enough away from Puerto Viejo. The grounds were lush and beautiful. We woke up every morning to the sounds of the jungle. We will definitely be back!
The rooms are fine, I loved the hanging thing on the balcony. :)
The hotel is located in a very nice environment, pretty garden, palm trees everywhere around, just on the beachfront and at the breakfast you have beautiful view of the garden and the sea.
The only uncomfortable thing was a lot of mosquitos in our room but that is what it is being in the nature.
We have stayed 5 nights and I would definitely recommend it!
Hotel looks exactly like in the photos! I had a really nice, relaxing stay there. The rooms are clean (although a little small). All the facilities were also clean and nice.
Location is super close to playa Negra (few minutes walking). The bus stop playa negra is also in walking distance (bus to Cahuita national park leaves there). And by bike it’s also only a few minutes to Puerto viejo (otherwise 30 min walking)
everything was over expectations. wonderful
room, proper tropical vibe, daily treats with cake and flowers on the bed. amazing breakfast with quality food and variety. great location, just on an amazing clean Caribbean beach with a private space for hotel guests. best thing is definitely staff. professional, kind, ready to assist in the best way. a proper 10 star hotel! extremely recommended
Great location and hosts! Across the street is fantastic French bakery, bike shop to get your local transportation and the sea with a nice swim beach and fancy bar of the adjacent hotel. Excellent Italian restaurant just a few houses away with the best pizza ever to pick up.. And an elegant dining experience with superb food and wine when you dine in! Overall great experience!
We spent 6 weeks moving around Puerto Viejo and this was the most comfortable place we stayed. The hotel is new, has A/C, offers very comfortable beds, is in a quiet location away from the noisy main road, and included an excellent breakfast. Parking was easy and the hotel was safe and relaxing. The pool was clean and really nice. Shawn was really helpful.
Very Cute and cozy hotel. The location is very good. Breakfast ( Switzerland/Costa Rica style) was amazing. The owner and dog are very friendly and kind. We left early in the morning, and they even handed us a breakfast bag. This stay helped us to make a memorable vacation at Puerto Viejo. We really appreciate it. Thank you.
The hotel itself is located in a beautiful place (about 2km from Puerto Viejo) and there are a few very good and cheap restaurants nearby. Fortunately, the guests themselves are also very cool and made our stay bearable.
In general summary, we would not go there again because the negatives clearly outweigh the negatives.
loved the hotel! being beachfront is rare for hotels in the area. It was nice to have beach side food and beverage service. The ocean was super calm and enjoyable to swim and float in. The hotel also had really good free breakfast options as well as paid lunch and dinner food and drinks. would highly recommend.
Beautiful beachfront hotel, nice and clean room with jungle view, vers helpful and friendly staff. The beachfront offers some sunchairs, seats and a bar. The parking spot needs some skill but you will figure it out after a couple of times. Breakfast was nice, especially the huevos rancheros
The property was amazing fun, little trails entertaining pool for tbe kids, and it has its own little trail to the beach (cocles) lots to do all over town. The breakfast was the top tier, the best hotel breakfast I've had in CR tbe beaches are so nearby.
The hotel is beautifully designed and our room was fabulous! We had our own plunge pool. The location is perfect as can easily walk to loads of restaurants and the downtown area of Puerto Viejo. The staff were all very friendly and helpful.
The property location was perfect! It had a beach front view from the restaurant area and was a 10 minute walk from the center of Puerto Viejo. There was a community kitchen and several free on-site activities each day.
wonderful little hotel up in the jungle set back from the road/beach. Raphael was super helpful - sending information via WhatsApp and on hand whenever you needed him. best breakfast in Costa Rica!
The beach is in front of the rooms which is great. it is very convenient because it is located in Puerto Viejo Downtown and therefore you can walk to the bars, restaurants, stores etc..
