Great location in the middle of downtown. At night, it’s a fairly quiet area. Decent breakfast (poor hours 8-10am) but little variety from day to day. Helpful front desk!

La Serena is a good central point to lodge, but it's its surroundings that make it a special place. There's nothing really special about La Serena as a city itself, but its sister city Coquimbo, offers a more diverse variety in terms of landmarks and gastronomy. Valle del Elqui is an hour drive away from La Serena, offering fantastic experiences for star gazers and peaceful settings.

It is an old, smallish city (second only to Santiago in size and age). There is access to the beach (and port) as well as access to the semi desert, where the observatories are located, around it. Very walkable downtown, lots of old churches, several museums, lots of places to eat in all price ranges, friendly locals, good public transportation, a nice city.

Every time I visit Serena, I love walking around the old part of town. I especially enjoy the colonial-style stone buildings, which most of them are quite well preserved. I enjoy aimlessly walking around town just taking in the different views of parks, winding streets, old buildings, and so on. Serena has a very nice cool special vibe. Also just being able to walk 30 minutes and reaching most places that are worth visiting means a lot to me. Getting around Serena is quite easy whether it be by bus, taxi, uber, biking, or - as I already said - just walking. There are many quaint places where to eat around the Recova area and all over downtown. However, I must say that taking a short trip to Coquimbo's "caleta" (fishing cove) is an absolute must if one is into sea food and fish in general. There are many different restaurants offering a wide variety of fresh seafoods and fish that one just can't miss. It's a delight!

La Serena is a nice historical city with beautiful beach and plenty of things to visit around. We visited the Elqui Valley, an astronomical observatory and the 3rd Millennium Cross in Coquimbo. The Japanese Garden is highly recommended.

A day to go around the city, the museums (not on Mondays and Sundays) and try the food and relax at the beach in the evenings.
A full day to a trip to an island to see the scenery animals and penguins.
A day to go to Coquimbo up to the Cross and to see the city.
If you want to enjoy the beach and walk or ride a bike at that long beautiful blue beach you can stay more.
I think 3-4 days (if you want to be at the beach more) is ideal.
The local beer is nice!
You can not find a good coffee in La Serena!
Location is right on the beach and within walking distance of a lot of good restaurants. You can't swim on this portion of the beach so you need to get a taxi or walk to the swimming safe spaces. But there is a surf school really nearby. Also you could walk to the bus station if you had too. Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful, we left our bags in super early in the morning once we arrived at 6 am.
I can only recommend this El Arbol Hostel. The stuff is very nice and incredibly helpful. The chef speaks English. She has very good recommendations for your stay and you can easily reach her with What‘ app. The place is though small, very comfortable, clean and cosy and La Serena is a surprisingly nice city with more things to do than you have probably thought.
Staff was delightful with their welcome and warm attention. Interiors and decors of their
Hotel is a little gem in the heart of La Serena few steps from the central Plaza de Armas.
La Serena is an authentic surprise with its charme of a relaxed town with its beautiful lighthouse looking at the majestic views of Ocean Pacific.

3) Staffs were really friendly. We left our wallet at the reception and it was kept safely.
4) inside the apartment/condominium there was swimming pool and artificial beach which was excellent.
it was in a great location right next to the beach! the staff were super friendly and did a great job communicating with me despite our language barrier. the pool was a little green and gross when i got there but the next day they had a crew out there working for hours and it looked great after!!
It's not a luxurious place to stay in, but it's good enough in relation to the price per night. I specially liked the location being close to the shopping mall, bus terminal, main avenue, etc. It's walking distance to many place downtown and even the beach. I also liked the free breakfast.
The apartment was very clean and comfortable. The staff appeared very competent, pleasant to deal with, and flexible when we kept changing our minds about the number of guests. The pool was very welcome, too. Location-wise, it couldn't be beat, as it was right in front of the beach.
The receptionist was probably the most friendly and happy Chilean we have met through our travels. Such a good vibe and great assistance. We loved the place mostly because the ocean was straight next to the balcony. Perfect place when you are roadtripping!
Good simple hotel. Nice breakfast with extra options to purchase should you want more. Good facilities and common areas - nice outside areas to sit and the ambience was friendly. Staff super helpful. Rooms simple but everything g you need.
Amazing hotel/hospedaje! Pablo is an amazing host and tries to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The breakfast is also really good with delicious jams and fruits from the garden. All in all we had a perfect stay in La Serena.
The hotel is so beautiful. The lobby, bedrooms, hallway, kitchen, etc. Everything is so beautifully decorated and I wish we spent more time here. The breakfast had a large variety and was nutritious and delicious
Nice rooms and beautiful garden! The owner Sandra is the most kind woman, and she helped us out a lot. Nice kitchen as well. Walking distance to La Serena city center, but not to the beach.
