Superb location in historic center! Great price, simple, clean with access to breakfast. You are greeted and assisted by the former owner who now manages the property. She is kind and solicitous of her guests’ needs and goes the extra mile to ensure their comfort. The walk up is a bit steep but we are 3 women in our 70s and managed.
There are two onsens for guests. The one for women is bright and cheerful.

Loved the peace and quiet after spending time in busy Tokyo. The morning markets and the Old Town were relaxing to stroll through and the locals were very helpful. We would definitely stay here again. Such a beautiful historical town.

It has been on my wish list, and we were there at the perfect time: Matsuri and cherry blossoms!!
I liked that it was not a big city. Hikes in the mountains/hills would have been nice, and the Hida Village was a special feature.

Takayama was my favourite destination in Japan - it is beautiful, a little calmer than some of the other tourist attraction cities and there was lots to see and do. I wish I had stayed longer. The espresso from the riverside market was the best coffee I had in Japan!

We highly recommend a visit.
We highly recommend a visit. The city is beautiful and provides a respite from the larger cities. The sound of the river seems to permeate the city. The flowering of cherry trees is magnificent during theSpring Festival. Some beautiful shrines and Edo period buildings, including a museum that provides an opportunity to walk through the living quarters and government administrative buildings and identifies the day to day functioning of a local government officials.
There is a wonderful, ‘tiny’ bar near the Retro Museum that is a place to hang out and meet other travelers and converse with the owner. His creative cocktails are really delicious. Loved the outside and upstairs seating as well.
This city knows how to welcome its guests with benches and a customer friendly attitude. Wonderful experience.

Takayama is a beautiful town.
Takayama is a beautiful town. It has a well preserved old district with historic buildings. We visited during spring and took a day trip to the ropeway. It would look amazing during winter. The people were super friendly & enjoyed tourists company.
The room is clean, big and quiet. Staff is friendly. Complimentary bicycles usage available on the first come first serve basis. Hot public bath facility available in this hotel. Japanese restaurants all nearby. Takamaya Train Station and the Bus Terminal is less than 100m away. Very convenient.
Our 2 days stay in Takamaya is fruitful. Manage to visit the UNESCO Shirakawa village, Sanmachi Historical Preserved Edo-Period Houses and hop into a traditional Ryokan 1 night stay in the mountainous region on public transport.
I cannot rate this place high enough. Has it's own onsen; rooms of the high standard you always get here; walking distance from the station; very central to the shops and markets. Staff recommended a bar for a quiet drink and "Tonio" turned out to be a great little watering hole. Tell the owner you're a Metallica fan and you've made a friend. Takayama was an overnight excursion for me, but this hotel, coupled with a delightful little town covered in snow, then a soak in the onsen, was a high point of my japan trip.
The only good sized room that we booked in Japan. I searched for hotel rooms for two adults and two kids and none of the hotels had space for the 4th person except for this one thats why I really appreciated four beds. kitchenette had everything essential that we needed. bathroom had laundry which was great help specially when you are with toddlers. shower was amazing. there is a 7/11 across the street and Takayama station and bus stop are about a 6 min walk. loved everything about this hotel.
The hotel feels ever so slightly on the older side, but in my opinion that works in its favour, as it adds to its charm. Everything was styled as a proper ryokan, the whole hotel has tatami floor. The top level open air Onsen is just fantastic, looking over the city (it was snowing very heavy while I was there, which made it even better). The breakfast buffet is also like a Japanese Kaiseki breakfast, amazing! Staff were also very friendly and polite like most places in Japan.
Lovely country ryokan up in the mountains with great onsen baths. Its remote and no facilities nearby but if you want a real Japanese ryokan experience this is great value. Dont expect Western menu but enjoy the artistry of japanese cuisine. There is a bus stop 150m away but buses run hourly genetslly. 1.5hr to Takayama and 2hrs or so to Matsumoto. Both via Hirayu Onsen. Its also close to beautiful Kamikochi and the Shin Hotaka Ropeway.
Like:
- good price point, especially when all other budget options near Station were fully booked (weekend)
- very clean, quiet, warm (good working aircon)
- onsen water baths with high ceiling and white bathroom tiling-bath stools etc, no smells, no mold sighted, very well-maintained, separate for men & women
- common wash basins, washrooms clean
- flexibility with room change upon check-in
- helpful English-Japanese speaking staff
Absolutely endearing staff who add a lot of charm to this establishment. This ryokan is remote and that is the point, right there in the middle of the mountains. Original Edo structure of an old house, with well designed extentions and typical ryokan rooms. I love it! Delicious japanese breakfast in private rooms. Next time we will try the Kaiseki. Beautifull onsen which however, has no view over the river nearby.
This was our only Ryokan stay, so I'm not really qualified to say, but I think it was a lovely place and certainly felt like a traditional Japanese experience. We appreciated the free shuttle from/to the bus/train at no cost and it was such a quick and lovely walk to everything in Takayama - what a fantastic little town! The staff were so kind, the Ryokan is so cute and we enjoyed the onsen.
The staff were so friendly and helpful! They went out of their way to make sure we were happy. The atmosphere was fantastic, with many people wearing kimonos and just enjoying themselves. A lovely ryokan in a great location, easy to access everything in Takayama and close to the train station. Highly recommend and we, especially my wife, would stay here again.
probably the best stay i’ve had in japan… traditional ryokan with futon beds. robes are provided and you have access to three private onsens (hot tubs).. just lock the door behind. good facilities as far as tea and coffee goes.. only a short walk from the hirayu onsen bus terminal which takes you to both kamikochi and takayama in a short time.
Very nice design, woody and modern reinterpretation of a Japanese traditional house or ryokan. Full amenities are provided in the room, which was more spacious than average hotels in touristy towns. Hot bath available and woody smell all along. Lobby is spacious and can be used as a work space. Kind and helpful staff. And it smells like wood.
very lovely ryokan. the staff was very friendly. the private onsen is great. there is a common room where you can sit, there are games for children, tea and coffee.
just 5 minutes walk from takayama station.
for breakfast there are tasty sandwiches made with a lot of care.
I can definitely recommend this hotel.
This ryokan is beautiful and charming, with very spacious and comfortable rooms. The staff were excellent and super helpful, and went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed. They were also kind enough to help book bus tickets and make travel arrangements over the phone in Japanese.
Good place near the Takayama Nohi Bus Center which is the main hub of visiting nearby towns and cities. I especially liked the small onsen. Most places in Takayama close soon so we usually returned to the hotel early and it gave me enough time to relax at the onsen
Wow! What an amazing experience. The staff of Oyado Yamakyu were so hospitable and accommodating and really made the ryokan experience unforgettable. The meals were beautifully presented and so unique! Wish we had spent a few more days at Oyado Yamakyu in Takayama.
I loved this ryokan! It provides you a really Japanese experience. The staffs are amazing, and everything is clean! The best value for money. They also have a Irori / fire room where you can book your make your own bbq . I highly recommend using it.
It is what to be expected from ryokan style hotel. Various types of onsen for both indoor and outdoor. The location is not far from akandana parking lot but can be considered a little far if not driving. But we are driving so everything is good.
Super great experience here! It’s my first time staying at a traditional Japanese hotel, and it was amazing, highly recommended! Really Nice service (there’s even Chinese staff) and perfect Onsen, I’d like be here next time I go to Takayama!
We had such a lovely time at Sumiyoshi Ryokan. The owners were very kind and welcoming. I highly recommend the dinner there which was beyond our expectations and one of the best we have had thus far in our trip in Japan.
Fantastic location by the river. Close to historic sections of Takayama.
Lovely, traditional old ryokan. Nice Japanese breakfast (western also available).
We loved our room overlooking the river.
