LAKE ORTA, ITALY'S MOST ROMANTIC AND BEAUTIFUL LAKE Lake Orta lies to the west of lake Maggiore. It is smaller and completely enclosed by a circle of green hills and mountains which form a sort of crown around it. It has a fascination all of its own because of its gentle and peaceful surroundings. The lake has been an inspiration to poets and writers for centuries and is without doubt the most romantic lake in Italy and one of the most romantic places on earth. ORTA SAN GIULIO The charm and fascination of the ancient village of Orta San Giulio are difficult to describe. Orta is the pearl and the heart of the lake. The absence of cars, the old houses with granite portals and wrought iron gates, the narrow lanes, the inner courtyards and the small, typical shops will take the visitor back to the past. Largely unchanged for centuries Orta is simply enchanting with its typical cobbled streets and archways lined with plenty of bars and restaurants. The pace of the village is slow and unhurried and makes for a perfect place to spend a relaxing holiday.
