The room was comfortable, tea, water abd a few special local snacks provided. The onsen was fantastic. Several public and 3 private onsen baths. The best part was lying in outdoor onsen at night looking up at moon and stars. The food was exceptional. Dinner was a set menu but then also a large buffet. Breakfast was large buffet in mornings.

Kusatsu Onsen Hotel Village, hotel in Kusatsu

Boasting indoor/outdoor hot-spring baths, 4 swimming pools and saunas, Kusatsu Onsen Hotel Village features various activities on site.

The location is away from the main tourist spots in Kusatsu Town, and there were options to take shuttle bus over. As we drove there, it wasn't an issue. Loved the feel of the nature that the hotel is set in. There were several activities available that you can enjoy at a discounted rate as a guest of the hotel. It was fun trying out the archery. Hope to come back and try out the lodge cabin accommodation next time!

Of the three most popular onsen towns in Gunma, Kusatsu is definitely the most accessible and easiest to wander through. It has an almost amusement park-like quality and is very convenient. There are not many dining options so make sure to book a hotel with breakfast and dinner.

I love this town for its distinctly authentic Japanese feel.

I love this town for its distinctly authentic Japanese feel. It is nestled in the mountains, a gorgeous drive from Tokyo (If you have the time, drive!) Many places to drop in for a foot soak, lots of little shops and restaurants. Prepare to wait in the busy season (which I believe is the fall and winter). This time we stayed in a traditional Japanese hotel with tatami and only futons for sleeping- being from the US, this made the trip especially fun but make sure you are ok with getting up and down from the floor. There are less people who speak English than in the major cities. But if you are comfortable pointing and smiling and trying google translate, it is a beautiful place to visit. Note that people with limited mobility may find the town difficult to navigate (steps and steep hills). Better for adults, but there is a little tropical zoo nearby and the onsen demonstration is fun.

Lovely Onsen town. Simply magical during winter.

Lovely Onsen town. Simply magical during winter. We went in February and it was snowing. Family love it so much that we’re planning to visit for next winter. A lot of private hot spring and delicious food. We had kaiseki for breakfast and dinner at our ryokan. Definitely worth the trip and ain’t too far from Tokyo. Stay a night if possible.

If you want to experience the quintessential Japanese, hot-spring town in the mountains then, Kusatsu is the place for you. It takes a while to get there with the train and bus but if you have the time then I would recommend it. The culture surrounding hot-springs is unique to the Japanese and there is no better place to experience it. Get early there for a day trip because most buses coming down to the train station stop running around 7 PM.

Kusatsu is a great place for natural hotsprings.

Kusatsu is a great place for natural hotsprings. Great Onsen. Its best to go for relaxation purpose and take a dip in the hotsprings. The places to look out for are 1) Yubatake (center of the town) - Please do visit in the evenings as well when the lights turn ON and make it a beautiful view. 2) Sainokawara Park and Open air Onsen. This is a must visit place to spend good walk in the park and then visit Open air Onsen JR Bus station is very close to center - Yubatake. So it's just a 5mins walk and also there are round trip bus by JR to all sightseeing spots. Most of the resorts offer shuttle bus service also; so I recommend to check with your resort before booking. This really helped us. The food is next best thing in Kusatsu. However if you are Vegetarian like us you might find difficulty to find good restaurants. However, there are a couple of Italian restaurants that offer good pasta and pizza which is loaded with vegetables. One major thing to note is the Bus service from Kusatsu Bus station to Nagonahara Kusatsuguchi. The bus service is not regular; so please check it and plan your outbound trip.

The Yubatake area is picturesque and has many nearby shops with Japanese treats you can take out and eat/drink while sitting and enjoying the ambiance of Yubatake. Lots of traditional Japanese buildings, walkable streets with shops selling souvenirs and Japanese treats. Be sure to take the 10min walk from Yubatake thru Sainokawahara Koen (Park) to the large outdoor hot spring bath Sainokawhara Rotenburo.

The hotel onsen was great. There are also private onsen rooms for booking. The food was excellent for both breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was a buffet. It was good and surprisingly had more Japanese food choices than many other hotels. Dinner was definitely worth the price. We just got the regular set but great and filling. The hotel staff was really friendly and helpful. They didn't speak very much English but it was no trouble. This is one of the hotels that are close to downtown, and about 15 min walk to the bus terminal.

This hotel charmed us with its ambiance from the moment we stepped inside. The proximity to the famous Yubatake and local onsens made it an ideal retreat. The hotel’s private onsen, while modest in size, has a lovely, intimate vibe. I got to enjoy it by myself which was a great experience. The level of service was amazing, with staff showcasing exceptional friendliness. The yukatas in our room were a thoughtful gesture that deeply enriched our cultural experience, making our trip feel even more special. I would stay here again!

The private and public onsen together with the one in the room were amazing, and overall the whole ryokan was beautiful with a gorgeous garden in the middle to enjoy after your bath. The mountain views fully complete the calm atmosphere. The staff was very friendly and attentive with us, and always helped us with anything we needed. The shuttle bus from and to Karuizawa is a great bonus, plus hourly rides into Kusatsu, to Yubatake bus station were very very convenient.

A very quiet and cute place! It really felt like a country side inn, so homey and tranquil. So peaceful and the rooms were quite spacious for the price. I wanted a Japanese style room for the experience and it met my expectations! There is also an onsen to enjoy. Since it runs all night, even if you chose the public bath, you'll find yourself alone at some point! The baths and rooms came with many toiletries as well.

The Kusatsu Onsen Hotel Village is more a resort than a hotel. I don’t know when it was built, but I’m guessing around the mid-seventies, when the resort was probably a very nice place to spend your vacation. The baths are very nice. The staff is top notch!!! Helpful and nice at all times. But then again, so was every person we met in Japan for 3 weeks, so I’m sure you would find that on other local hotels as well.

One of the things that we really really appreciated about Kirishimaya Ryokan was staff that speak great English! Not that we expect that when we travel but it’s always wonderful to be able to converse naturally in our mother tongue! :) A very homey ryokan, dated but clean and well-run. The onsens were great…and really hot! Also close to Yubatake and pretty much the centre of Kusatsu.

Great location, great facilities. The staff were very friendly and explained things well. The hotel room was very clean and comfortable, and the private onsen rooms are fully equipped with sinks and places to change. There is also a games room with vintage games and a very cosy vibe. If I ever go back to Kusatsu, I will definitely book with this hotel again. :)

Beautifully designed hotel with spacious rooms and comfortable beds. It was nice to be about 5 minutes walking time from both the bus terminal and the yubatake. The private onsen was a plus and the online reservations were easy to use. The breakfast was excellent and as a foreigner, I was happy that the menu was printed so that I could learn what I was eating.
