The walled town of Alghero on Sardinia’s west coast has an altogether more down-to-earth vibe than the more exclusive Emerald Coast on the opposite side of the island. In fact, it feels more Catalan than Italian.
The seafront walls and defensive towers surrounding the historic center were actually built by the Catalans in the 16th century, and many residents still speak a dialect from that era. However, Sardinia has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the Nuraghe di Palmavera stone dwellings outside the town are evidence of this. Another nuraghic site is Anghelu Ruju, near Alghero Fertilia Airport.
South of the airport is sandy Maria Pia Beach which continues all the way to Alghero harbor and is lined with beachfront hotels, bars and restaurants offering tasty seafood, including local lobster. Boat trips leave the harbor to Neptune’s Grotto along the coast. Next door is Nereo Cave, supposedly the largest Mediterranean sea cave and a popular diving spot.
Also worth visiting are the pedestrian streets of the old town, packed with shops and sidewalk cafés. Also here are the 16th-century Palazzo d’Albis and the cathedral with its mixed architectural styles.
The Alghero accommodations on Booking.com include 5-star hotels with pools, cheap B&Bs and apartments with parking.

Well worth a visit, Beautiful old town with mazing little restaurants and coffee/gelato stops , Fabulous boat trips. Very friendly city and all the locals were most welcoming and friendly. Will certainly be back.
Only negatives would be the taxis ( avoid if possible) I like to get a taxi to aiprport when Im leaving a city so that there are no hiccups / delays . However in the end I took the bus for €1.50. One taxi driver was looking for €40 and insisted I called him rather than the company he worked for.
Avoid main restaurants in the old city. Most are over-priced and from what I could make out most are run by the same person. But its hard not to fall in love with this amazing city

Really liked Alghero .
Really liked Alghero . The quaint old narrow streets in the town . The long prom walk . The port. The old buildings. People very friendly apart from the guy in the tourist office who was arrogant and rude. We could not get into some of the Churches as there was work going on.

Alghero is a lovely place to visit with its historical old town of a maze of pretty cobbled streets consisting of multiple restaurants, shops and wine bars. Lovely marina where you can take boat trips from. Lots of nice restaurants outside of the old town, would recommend Rafel restaurant and bar situated on the beach for that special dining experience.

Fabulous place which exceeded our expectations.
Fabulous place which exceeded our expectations. Safe, plenty to do and lots of good places to eat. I would recommend hiring a car. We did from 'Casual Van'. It was great to see the surrounding coast. Really stunning scenery. Would recommend Regina Margherita and La Bottega for meals and Jo'pier. We got to and from the airport by taxi which we pre booked.

Lovely, charming, walkable little city that makes you feel like you're on holiday but it doesn't feel like a tourist toytown. We were there in mid October so it may well be much busier in the summer, but it was not at all crowded and was one of loveliest holidays we've had. Good food, everything is walkable, excellent city and a boat trip to the grottos.
This place is one of the most convenient options to stay in Alghero. The apartment is close to the city center. You can reach by short walk, a supermarket, restaurants, the beach, pretty everything that you need. Simonetta was so helpful that even after my stay, I forgot some items in the room, she was so kind that she went to the local postal office to mail my items back to me. I have never received that level of personalized attention from 5 star hotel. I totally recommend this place for many reasons.
Monica and her family welcomed us at the flat. The communication was very easy and quick before and during our stay for two nights in Alghero. The flat is in the middle of the old town and perfect to enjoy visiting the city as well as discover the restaurants and little streets.
Parking was not possible directly at the flat, but we were able to find also free parking options in a 10 min walking distance. The flat is properly equipped with everything you need. We can definitely recommend staying here.
I had a great time here, Alghero and surroudnings are very lovely. It was my first time in Sardinia, but I know that not last ☺️, the island is in some way magical hihi. Apartment was absolutely stunning 😍🤩 with soul, not another white, lifeless and cold place.
Everything was really close to apartment:
- old square
- port, sea and beach
- airport bus stop and ticket machine (on the same street, about 350m)
- shops (Eurospin, COOP, CONAD,)
- lots of restaurants and cafes
Location was great.Beauiful beach nearby. Hotel was clean, helpful friendly staffs.Organised car hire for us.Changed room for as without a question. We were treated with respect. They did their best to make our time special in Sardinia .
Bar food was ok.We would recommend it to families. We had a great time.
The card is handy to use in the hotel so we didn't have to carry bank cards with us,we paid for everything at the end of our stay.
A jewel outside of Alghero.
If you’re looking for a quiet and familiar place with short distance to city and beach you are on the right place here!
The highlight is definitely the dinner which takes place outside under a roof. Annalisa, Sylvia and their mum will prepare typical and delicious menu for you with an authentic taste of Sardinia.
Thank you for having us and being also so cute to our baby Lenni <3
The apartment was very spacious and welcoming. The decor gave you a feel that were right on the beach even though you were a block away. The host had more than enough supplies to get you through the first couple of nights which is very thoughtful, as some properties barely give you the minimum. I would definitely recommend this property if staying in Alghero.
Amazing place, the host Annalisa and her family were really nice to us and gave us an upgrade to a beautiful apartment due to our room being in maintenance mode. We went to a family agriturismo for one night which was also a great stay! Would definitely come back if visiting Alghero or as a stop over go other Sardinia destinations.
Wonderful, welcoming staff. Great location and very walkable to the historic centre. Our room was spacious, the delicious breakfast was very ample and we could not have asked for more.
We are looking forward to going back to charming Alghero soon, and really hoping to be able to stay at Hotel Domomea again.
Location, location, location. Hotel is by the beach. Has a nice swimming pool also. 2 min by walk from hotel is a supermarket and the best ice cream in the city. The old city is located 20 minutes by foot. Airport 10 minutes drive from hotel. Taxi from airport cost between 24-34 euro.
The location was the best (we had a a room with a sea view), with some nice pubs just next to hotel. Around 10 minutes by walk to historic centre.
It was a bit noisy but the windows were soundproof so it doesnt bother us at all.
We could stay at the pool after checkout for few hours.
Rooms on the beach and a well maintained hotel. Sufficient car-parking which was necessary for our needs. Located about 15 minutes drive from Alghero town centre. Nothing fancy and a very comfortable stay whilst touring Sardinia by car. Breakfast selection was fine.
I never slept better during our trip to Sardinia than while staying in B&B Cuscino e Cappuccinos. Being just a 5 min walk from the city center, it’s a true gem! And Dolores was just the most welcoming, taking care of us as if we were family. Amazing experience!
This was the best place we stayed for a 5 day stay and have travelled Italy fir 2 months. Perfect for our needs- central place for day trips, things nearby to see & do, beaches, ability to have a very nice home to relax in.
The location was perfect just outside of the bustling town centre. The pool was fantastic the staff were super friendly and always there to help. Our 3 nights in Hotel Calabona was the highlight of our 17 days in Sardinia.
This was truly a dream come true! Erica and Fabio were the nicest couple I met in Italy! Went above and beyond to make my stay comfortable! The tub was the best! Thank you for everything!
It was immaculate!
Great hotel right in the centre of the old town. Lovely breakfast in the cloisters each morning with a goop9d choice. Very nice friendly staff. Would highly recommend this hotel best location in Alghero
It was one of the best hostel in Sardinia, great location, comfortable bed, very clean and very well equipped and maintained. It was one of the most extensive place that I've stayed in Italy.
We changed four hotels in Sardinia and it was the best. Good location, staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast was also delicious, many choices, fresh food. Many parking places in the street
