This was our third time staying here. We just love the relaxing atmosphere, the excellent food in the restaurant. The staff are always very friendly and provide a great service. We always go on Valentines weekend and it is never too busy, it can actually feel very exclusive in this regard. The fantastic spa completes the experience

Don't like posting negatives to but this did not start well. notice on door definitely no check ins before 3pm so wasn't happy when no one was there until 3.30. No ambiance very dark and gloomy which is to be expected in an old castle. The Hothfield bedroom was nice, with view of keep. Only one other couple checked in so it all felt a little strange in such a huge building. A lot of signs for things you can't do. Did not have any meals but dining room looked like something from King Arthur's days armour tapestry wall hangings etc. when deciding to stay do your homework and make up your own minds. A fairly long walk from carpark if carrying heavy bags.

We had a family crisis hit during or stay and our hosts were so very kind and helpful, allowing us to extend the stay another night, which reduced stress enormously. Thank you again!

Everything! Friendly host, nice touch with the scones etc on arrival. Lovely clean facilities, would have loved to stay longer!
It’s up for sale and needs TLC. The bones of it are great, the staff are unfriendly and a little weird!
Young lady waitress was the exception.
We had decided on the taster menu, it was not a taster, it was three starters a main and a slightly random dessert.
No alternative to mussels, which were tough, more deep fried cheese balls swapped in.
It was all entertaining, probably due to the amount of Prosecco we had… but I wouldn’t eat there again. Worth seeing the musty internals of the dining room and the very busy gardener who became the maitre de and then played piano!

A lovely village with a castle, river, woodlands, a great park under construction and a swimming pool. There are a few nice cafes, a couple of restaurants and pubs and some lovely gift shops. We ate at the 'Crown and Cushion' pub for a traditional meal and 'The Cutting Garden Cafe' for breakfast. We had a lovely stay and would definitely return.

Appleby is a stones throw from the Dales and the Lake District. The town itself is friendly with several options for food and drink. It does have a "small" weekly market and several independent shops. There are lots of walking trails and a haunted castle, a perfect hide away from city living.

We phoned up on the morning of our booking to confirm check in time. We were told they were cancelling our booking because they had no bed linen. They had not attempted to call and inform us. Be careful if you book this hotel

It was horrible from start to finish i had paid for 2 nights i left first thing in the morning after first night. It is nothing like the web says, one man that stunk of alcohol and bo checked us in he was also the cook and the bar man, one look at the state of the kitchen told me i wasnt eating in there, it wasnt even a bar it was a pop up with can of beer, to say i was devastated was an under statement , the bed squeeked all night with every movement, it was pitch black in the corridors we had to use the torches on our phones to find the room, do not go here

What a fantastic opportunity to stay in a truly memorable location. Yes the floors are uneven yes the things are old very old. The bathrooms are however up to date. You are a stones throw from town.
Staff were fantastic but stretched by the logistics a little. We had wifi other than that go to the bar the games room tv room or walk in the grounds….we loved it don’t go to a Castle if you want everything new…….I would recommend this to anyone who appreciates staying in a castle that is pretty much as it was in 1680s parts of it far older than that….. thanks for a great opportunity to stay in the awesome place
Clean, homely, warm and cosy. The cottage was easy to find, we had no issues with parking in the yard and the cottage had everything we needed for a weeks stay. Collette was really helpful and responsive. Its about a half hour drive to the Lake District which was fine for us. We were there when the Appleby Horse Fair was on and although the village was much busier than normal, it was still quiet in the cottage, except for the occasional clip clop of horses hooves. Great value for money, we would return in a heartbeat.
When we arrived we were given an upstairs room in the adjoining building. The exterior stairs were a bit steep for me so we asked if they could change us to a ground floor room. They very kindly obliged and we were given a fabulous, large room on the ground floor with two very comfy chairs in front of the TV. The bed was large and comfortable and the shower in the bath was good. The staff were friendly and helpful and the view from the breakfast room overlooking Appleby are beautiful.
The booking.com site indicates availability of a family room with multiple beds, which we booked. Upon arrival, we were informed that there is not a family room and the booking site must have had an error. The staff were incredibly understanding and accommodating. They brought in a foldout bed for us straight away that met our needs. The room was spacious enough to easily accommodate the trundle bed without issues.
We visited Appleby for three nights with our dogs so this house was great because of the enclosed garden. The property is in a fabulous location and Mark is super duper helpful!
The house is very dated but served our purpose. The stairs are a challenge especially if you have a little drink or three on holiday! We would return if ever in the area again.
Thanks Mark!

We wanted an overnight stay in Appleby and this suited us down to the ground. Spotlessly clean, with an amazingly friendly host, the property was within easy walking distance of the centre of Appleby with its pubs and restaurants. The property was immaculate in every way and the breakfast cooked to perfection.
The hotel is in a small village , so easily found . There was hot chocolate along with tea/coffee in the room's hot drink making tray . It was quiet at night , so I had a good sleep . The wi-fi worked fine . The bed was comfortable . The shower was good , with plentiful hot water .
We stayed at the Crown Cottage in Appleby which belongs to the Crown and Cushion pub in the town. The cottage was amazing and had everything we could wish for. We will definitely consider this cottage again next time we are in Appleby.
Excellent cottage and great location within lovely Appleby and close to fabulous scenery. Kitchen is very well equipped and the whole place is very comfortable and yet quite spacious (for 5 of us).
The property is situation in the middle of Appleby which is quite convenient. Though we did not go into the main portion of the property, which appeared lovely, I wish we had stayed there.
The spa was absolutely beautiful. Absoulte hidden gem. All the staff at the hotel were so friendly and helpful. We even got a free upgrade on our room, which was fantastic.
